The Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States, held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia,Samoa, featured the launch of a network of regional sustainable energy centers for SIDS in Africa, the Pacific, Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. The south-south multi-stakeholder partnership is coordinated by the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Sustainable Energy Mechanism – SIDS DOCK and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with financial support of the Governments of Austria and Spain.


Barbados will sign a five-year partnership declaration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) early next month.

The agreement will be signed by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart on the side-lines of the September 1-4 Third International United Nations Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Conference in Samoa

A government statement said the five-year partnership, which seeks to promote sustainable low-carbon industrial development, builds on Barbados’ green economy thrust, with emphasis on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).


The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) participated in a historic regional workshop to promote sustainable energy industries and markets in the Caribbean.

A two day Validation Workshop on the Needs Assessment and Project Document for the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) has commenced in Dominica.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in cooperation with SIDS DOCK (represented by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) are assisting Caribbean Countries in the establishment of the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE).
